Hemant Misra

Swiggy
Vice President - Head of Applied Research
Hemant Misra has been an active researcher in the broad areas of text and signal processing, speech/speaker recognition, information retrieval, machine learning, healthcare applications and education. After finishing his M.S. thesis in 1999 from IIT, Madras, on the topic of speaker recognition using artificial neural networks, he worked in a start-up developing speech and speaker recognition solutions for the Indian market. Subsequently,  he joined EPFL for PhD and completed his thesis titled "Multi-stream processing techniques for noise robustness in automatic speech recognition" in 2006. During his post-doc tenures at Telecom ParisTech, France, University of Glasgow, UK, and Xerox Research Centre Europe, France, Hemant explored the possibility of using unsupervised topic models, such as latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), for applications like false document detection, text segmentation, multimedia information retrieval, document categorisation, authorship recovery, social networking mining and related tasks.

At Philips, working as a senior scientist from 2011 to 2016 in the healthcare domain, Hemant conceptualised end-to-end solutions such as mobile obstetrical monitoring (MoM) solution and intelligent referral system. Subsequently, from 2016 to 2018, he worked as a Senior Research Scientist at IBM's India Research Lab (IRL) in the Cognitive Education and Interactions Department. Rapid changes in technologies and the job market needs are leading to a paradigm shift in education and learning - the concept of life-long learning is the focus of attention for individuals and governments alike. Hemant lead "IBM Research Career Advisor" project developing a suite of APIs to cater to the skilling/reskilling needs of individuals in developed/developing market. Prior to joining Swiggy, Hemant was engaged with Citicorp Services India Private Limited (Citi) as a Senior Vice President, leading the research and innovation initiatives in the ML and AI spaces. His team worked on developing capabilities such as voice analytics, optical character recognition and text mining for internal requirements of Citi. At Swiggy, currently Hemant is 'VP - Head of Applied Research'. The goal of his team is to develop capabilities in the areas of computer Vision (CV), natural language processing (NLP) and automatic speech recognition (ASR).

Apart from these research activities, Hemant has interest in mentoring children and youngsters using story telling and hands-on approaches, understanding Indian culture and its philosophy, learning new skills and participating in community activities such as those proposed by "Ugly Indian".
